Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy is based on a holistic, client-centered approach to support our clients through physical challenges at every stage of life on their path toward inner peace and personal healing.

Somatic yoga combines yoga therapy with somatic movement and awareness techniques, recognizing that our bodies hold memories and emotions. This approach enhances awareness of bodily sensations to facilitate the release of pain, processing, integration, and healing of these experiences, mind and body.

Core Principles of Somatic Yoga

  • Interoception: This is the awareness of sensations like heart rate, breathing, pain, and muscle activity. By tuning into these signals, practitioners gain a deeper understanding of their physical and emotional states, leading to better responses to stressors.

  • Exteroception: This refers to the awareness of external sensations such as touch, temperature, and sound. It helps integrate internal experiences with the environment, grounding practitioners in the present moment.

  • Proprioception: This involves awareness of the body’s movement, balance, and spatial position. Somatic yoga enhances proprioception through slow, gentle movements, improving coordination, balance, and body mechanics.

  • Embodied Awareness: present strengthens the connection between physical and emotional states. Techniques like mindfulness body scanning facilitate exploration of sensations without judgment.

  • Sensory-Motor Learning: This principle highlights that movement should be guided by bodily sensations. Mindful practice fosters an understanding of how emotions and sensations interconnect, enhancing motor control and body awareness.

  • Mind-Body Integration: Recognizing how physical experiences relate to emotional states allows exploration and release of past traumas and stress, strengthening the mind-body connection.

  • Bottom-Up Processing: Somatic yoga starts with the body’s sensory systems to induce changes in the brain, physical sensations first to influence emotional states and effectively release stored tension.

  • Slow, Mindful Movements: Characterized by gentle, exploratory exercises, somatic yoga encourages deep feeling and integration of each movement promoting relaxation and flexibility.

  • Focus on Internal Experience: The practice prioritizes internal sensations over external alignment, guiding practitioners to connect with their body's energetic flows and subtle shifts, enhancing body awareness and emotional integration.
